With the win at Cabot last week, the Northside football team clinched the No. 2 seed and a first round bye in the state playoffs.

“Having the bye is good, it will allow our players a chance to heal up a little bit. I think it speaks volumes as to where our program is,” coach Mike Falleur said.

The Grizzlies could’ve gotten the No. 1 seed if they had defeated the North Little Rock Charging Wildcats two weeks ago this Friday.

“I told them that they had played a great game, not to hang their heads. We just played the number 1 ranked team in the state down to the wire, hopefully we can meet them again on Dec. 2, Falleur said.

The date Falleur is referring to is the day of the state championship game.

A week before the North Little Rock game, quarterback Max Frazier suffered an ankle injury in a game at Conway. He is rumored to return this week, but it isn’t guaranteed. This means that Tre Norwood will once again be responsible for all of the quarterback duties.

“I know that Max is working hard to get well, I can’t tell you when, ankle injuries take different amounts of time,” Falleur said.

The Grizzlies still have one more game to play before they start their postseason campaign, but may be able to play spoiler by keeping rival Southside out of the playoffs with a win against the Mavericks this week.

Currently, the Mavericks; 3-6 (2-4), sit just one game ahead of the Little Rock Catholic Rockets; 2-7 (1-5), for the sixth and final spot in the playoffs. With a Rockets win on Thursday, the day right before the “Battle of Rogers Avenue”, the Mavericks would then be forced to beat the Grizzlies because Catholic owns the tiebreaker over Southside.

“It would be great to beat our biggest rival,” Falleur said.

The COMPLETE standings are listed below. Please note that the top six teams at the end of the season qualify for the State playoffs.

1. North Little Rock 6-0

2. Ft. Smith Northside5-1

3. Bryant 4-2

4. Conway 3-3

5. Cabot 3-3

6. Ft. Smith Southside 2-4

7. LR Catholic 1-5

8. LR Central 0-6
