The Northside Grizzlies football team defeated the Southside Mavericks for the first time in 11 years on Nov. 4.

“It feels good [defeating Southside] after losing two close games [against Southside] in my first three years, it was good to get that [streak] behind us,” coach Mike Falleur said.

Not only did the Grizzlies beat the Mavericks, they absolutely dominated them, winning 52-13.

“I was happy to see us play good and take care of them, also that so many players got to play, Falleur said.

Since the regular season is in the books, the state playoffs began last week. The Grizzlies earned the No. 2 seed in the 7-A Central and also a first round bye in the playoffs. They will play the Bentonville Tigers in the quarterfinals tonight at Mayo-Thompson Stadium.

“I think the bye week will help us with injuries and such, I’m not worried about the rest our guys will prepare and play a good game this week,” Falleur said.

Before last season, the Tigers had been to five consecutive State Championship Games, winning three out of the five. Also, the Tigers have made at minimum, the semi-finals in each of the past six seasons, so in a way, the Grizzlies have a shot to end yet another streak. They may have the best shot at it this season given the Tigers “struggles” this season after earning “only” a No. 3 seed.

“They [Bentonville] are a very good football team. [They’re} well coached, [they] play hard… we are going to have to play one of our best games of the year, which I expect us to do that,” Falleur said.

With all of the momentum the Grizzlies have going, it’s easy to look ahead to the State Championship Game, however Falleur has his team focused.

“I preach to our players that this is a one game season, and the first one is the hardest to win. If you want another season, you must prepare and play your best game this week,” Falleur said.

With a win, the Grizzlies will face the winner of the Conway and Fayetteville game also being played this week. If Conway, wins, Northside will host. If Fayetteville wins, Fayetteville will host.
