Tomorrow night, the Northside Grizzlies boys’ basketball team will go on the road to face the current top team in the conference; North Little Rock . A win would put the Grizzlies in good position to win the conference championship.

We will now break down all of the different ways or scenarios that the Grizzlies have to win the conference championship. Before we get into this, let’s take a look at the current 7-A Central standings:

*Please note that Little Rock Catholic and Southside are not on the list provided. This is because they are each mathematically out of the STATE Tournament. Although we know who will be representing the conference at the state tournament, no team has a set seed just yet.

Seed/Team          Record        Games Back        AAA Points

1. N. Little Rock      10-1                —                               63

2. Northside            9-2                  1                                79

3. Cabot                   8-3                  2                                67

4. Central                6-5                  4                                46

5. Conway               5-6                  5                                40

6. Bryant                 5-6                  5                                51

With just three games left in the season, the Grizzlies are currently 9-2 in the 7-A Central and are sitting in second place; behind North Little Rock. With Cabot’s loss at Little Rock Central earlier this week, the Grizzlies are guaranteed at least a three seed in the STATE Tournament. If the Grizzlies’ are going to win the conference championship, one of the following scenarios HAS to happen.

Scenario #1

This is the Grizzlies’ simplest path to a conference championship:

Friday, February 17:

  • Northside WIN @ North Little Rock by AT LEAST 4 points.

Tuesday, February 21:

  • Northside WIN vs. Cabot.
  • North Little Rock LOSS @ Bryant.

Because of a three point Charging Wildcat win at Northside back in January, the Grizzlies must win by four or more points tomorrow night to have the tiebreaker over them. Assuming that Northside takes care of business on senior night next Tuesday against Cabot, all that they would need is a North Little Rock LOSS at Bryant on that same night.

Scenario #2

Friday, February 17:

  • Northside WIN @ North Little Rock by at least 4 points.

Tuesday, February 21:

  • Northside WIN vs. Cabot OR North Little Rock LOSS @ Bryant.

Friday, February 24:

  • Northside WIN @ Southside OR North Little Rock LOSS @ Cabot.

Even with a LOSS to Cabot, a North Little Rock LOSS at Bryant on Tuesday night of next week AND a North Little Rock LOSS at Cabot on Friday night of next week would put the Grizzlies’ right back into the picture. All that they would have to do then would be to defeat a struggling Southside team next Friday night.

Scenario #3

Friday, February 17:

  • Northside WIN @ North Little Rock by 2 or LESS points.

Tuesday February 21:

  • Northside WIN vs. Cabot.
  • North Little Rock LOSS @ Bryant OR  SEE SECOND BULLET on Friday, February 24 below.

Friday, February 24:

  • Northside WIN vs. Southside.
  • From second bullet on Tuesday, February 21: North Little Rock LOSS @ Cabot.

As previously mentioned, in order for the Grizzlies to have the head-to-head tiebreaker with North Little Rock, they must defeat the Cats’ by FOUR or more points. If they were to only win by one or two points, they would then need North Little Rock to lose to Cabot next Friday night. That would be their THIRD loss, and Northside would only have TWO, therefore the conference title would go to the Grizzlies.

Scenario #4:

Friday, February 17:

  • Northside WIN @ North Little Rock by 3 points.

Tuesday February 21:

  • Northside WIN vs. Cabot
  • North Little Rock LOSS @ Bryant OR (SEE Friday, February 24).

Friday, February 24:

  • Northside WIN vs. Southside.
  • (From second bullet on Tuesday, February 21). North Little Rock LOSS @ Cabot.

ALL Remaining Games:

  • Northside MUST protect their AAA POINTS lead; currently at 79, ahead 16 against North Little Rock. If you are unsure what AAA POINTS are, or are unsure how the AAA points system works, then you can check the AAA POINTS explanation at the bottom of the page. Here are the current  7-A Central AAA POINTS standings:

*Please note that Northside, Cabot, and North Little Rock are the only teams mentioned. This is because mathematically, these are the only three teams that still have a chance at winning the conference title.

Rank/Team          AAA Points

1. Northside             79

2. Cabot                    67

3. NLR                      63

Northside has a pretty comfortable lead in AAA POINTS, so this scenario would likely work well for the Grizzlies.

It should be a very entertaining ending to the regular season as we head into the STATE Tournament in less than two weeks.

AAA Points System EXPLAINED!

Anytime two teams split the regular season series and the margin of victory is even as well, the AAA POINTS SYSTEM is used. Each win a team has is rewarded with AAA POINTS based upon how many points they won by. Each point a team wins by equals an AAA point. Their is a limit on how many AAA POINTS a team can earn at TEN, so if a team wins by ten, eleven, twelve, etc., they get TEN AAA POINTS.
